Job Description

  • A VWC Peer Writing Consultant’s primary responsibility is to review and respond to student writing submissions with a kind, supportive voice, from the perspective of an educated (but not expert) reader.
  • Peer Writing Consultants should have proficiency in academic writing and facility with online communication.
  • Every consultant should strive to be an effective collaborator and communicator, have interest in supporting other AU students’ growth as writers, and join in conversation about composition/writing center theory and practice.
  • Consultants are also responsible for helping the VWC achieve its ideal of inclusive, accessible, and antiracist writing support in accordance with the Antioch University core mission.
  • The majority of the work of the VWC is responding to writers’ submissions, but the remainder includes contributing to Writing Support and the Antioch community through professional development, projects, and collaboration.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Use VWC protocols to respond to student writing
  • Monitor the VWC queue for new submissions
  • Respond to submissions in a timely and appropriate fashion
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and stay current with required readings
  • Make up for any missed meetings through engagement with meeting recordings and/or notes
  • Consistently read and respond to work-related emails
  • Communicate and schedule work and absences with appropriate lead time
  • Contribute to VWC newsletter
  • Assist in developing materials and resources
  • Represent the VWC in classes when appropriate

Consultant Learning Objectives:

  • Deepen understanding of academic writing, its conventions and history, and its problems and opportunities in relation to social justice, antiracism, and inclusive community
  • Develop skills for offering authentic written feedback that fosters writers’ growth
  • Gain insight into the variety of writing and thinking that Antioch students engage in across the University
  • Practice reading and analyzing written work

Qualifications

  • VWC Consultants must have a strong proficiency in writing and facility with online communication.
  • Consultants should be effective collaborators and communicators interested in supporting other AU students’ growth as writers.
  • Consultants should also be interested in contributing to ongoing conversation and improvement of composition/writing center theory and practices.
  • As nearly all VWC work is virtual, consultants must have a strong self-directed work ethic and be able to regularly schedule and fulfill their VWC responsibilities.
  • Prior tutoring experience, academic consultation, or peer support work is preferred, but not required.
  • Strong presentation and resume-writing skills are a significant plus.
  • Most importantly, we seek individuals who are reflective and collaborative, able to accept and utilize feedback, and eager to grow and develop their own skills.
