Culver City Speaker Series
June 19, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Randy Shaw on Housing Affordability
The City of Culver City is hosting a Speaker Series based on 2018’s successful GPU Prelude Series. This series is intended to inform, educate, and create a common dialogue around issues of importance to everyone who lives, works, plays and/or learns in Culver City. The entire community is invited to join in the discussion! Access a written summary and video link for past events on the Speaker Series page.
For the third event in this series, Culver City and Antioch University Los Angeles team up to welcome Randy Shaw, Executive Director of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, San Francisco’s leading provider of housing for homeless single adults. Shaw’s new book, Generation Priced Out: Who Gets to Live in the New Urban America, highlights the pricing out of a new generation of working and middle-class residents from the nation’s most progressive cities. Shaw offers a roadmap for cities to end exclusionary land use policies and build the infill housing necessary to expand affordability and combat climate change. Join us on June 19 to learn what Culver City can do to reverse social and racial inequity and to expand its housing opportunities. A book signing will follow Shaw’s talk.
Randy Shaw’s prior books include The Activist’s Handbook, Beyond the Fields: Cesar Chavez, the UFW, and the Struggle for Justice in the 21st Century, and The Tenderloin: Sex, Crime and Resistance in the Heart of San Francisco. Shaw has been an attorney since 1982 and is editor of BeyondChron.org. He spoke with Jeff Schechtman of The California Sun Podcast on April 25, 2019. Find a link to the episode here.
