Alumni reflect the PhD in Leadership and Change program

“The PhD process is more about perseverance than any other attribute.   It’s a marathon.   The beauty of the Antioch University program is that the ‘aid stations’ along the route are world class.   The faculty approach a student’s development with what I call compassionate rigor.   They are equally committed to process and product and the individual attention given to students is unlike any other educational experience in my life.   On-line programs don’t work well for me as a learner, so Antioch’s low residency model satisfied my need to belong to a community of learners while still attending to the other dimensions of my life — my family, a civilian career as a consultant, and obligations as a Colonel in the military reserve.   The beauty of the Antioch University approach is the immediate integration of scholarship and practice; research for Antioch projects became interwoven with daily work activities so both strengthened each other in ways I never could have predicted.”

Dr. Brent French, Cohort 8
Lexmark International Industry Consultant, Air Force Reservist

Colonel and Augmentee to the Deputy Director of Installations and Mission Support for Air Force Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field

“When selecting a PhD program I was deliberate in selecting one that would be relevant regardless of my area of professional practice.   Antioch University’s PhD in Leadership and Change delivered as promised.   As a senior-level administrator in higher education, I found the interdisciplinary model for developing scholarly, reflective, practitioners to be a perfect program for helping me reach my personal and professional goals.    The design of the program  acknowledged me  fully as a scholar and a busy professional as well as a mom and wife.   The program opened my eyes to my ability to influence leadership and change not only within my profession but also in the larger world.”

Dr. Nicole Roades, Cohort 7
Vice President for Institutional Advancement
Southern State Community College

“Attending Antioch’s PhD program in Leadership and Change was the best career choice I made during that particular stage of my life. It was a transformative experience. It provided an opportunity to learn, reflect, and engage in a safe, supportive environment with amazing faculty, interesting students, and topics that are close to my heart.”

Dr. Susie Erenrich, Cohort 5
Executive Director, Cultural Center for Social Change

“I have been engaged in social justice work for over 50 years and am a proud graduate of Antioch University’s PhD in Leadership and Change program.  There are numerous take aways from the program that create its success and made the journey so fulfilling and enjoyable. Among them are an authentic student-centered learning environment, courageous, knowledgeable and compassionate faculty and staff, the program’s insistence on the development of and support for change agents, and the ever-evolving exposure to relevant literature on the nature of change and leadership. Additionally, the opportunity to learn and grow with a multi-dimensional, multi-talented, multi-perspective cohort of adult learners helped me to imagine and believe in newer ways of tackling our seemingly never ending need to co-create a healthy, resilient, and peaceful world. With new ideas, born out of diverse and collaborative thinking, comes new energy. New energy brings with it new possibilities. With new possibilities comes renewed hope and belief that we will evolve into our better selves. This is the gift of the Leadership and Change PhD in Leadership and Change program.”

Dr. Susan McKevitt, Cohort 5
Former Deputy Director and Lead Investigator for the New Hampshire Commission for Human Rights

“Among the many ways that this program is special is the focus on inclusion — thoughts are embraced, considered, refined and treated with respect by the faculty and cohort members. The environment that results is nurturing and formative, teaching in a very special way the skills of clearly articulating, refining, and defending critical thinking that is informed by foundational skills in research and a very rich understanding of the teachings in Leadership and Change.”

Dr. Anthony Scriffignano, Cohort 4
Senior Vice President, Worldwide Data and Insight at Dun and Bradstreet

“This program did more than teach me about leadership and change. It was an experience that transformed who I am and that helped to prepare me to fulfill my dream. There are three very special things about this program not likely found elsewhere: authentic, inspiring, and internationally known faculty; a rigorous, relevant and transformative curriculum; and a format and process that is customize-able to make it all come together for busy professionals.”

Dr. Shelley Chapman, Cohort 3
Senior Educational Consultant, The IDEA Center

“The PhD in Leadership and Change at Antioch University was a perfect fit for me in so many ways. The faculty are supportive, the program is structured, yet flexible and my peers were a fascinating group of engaged learners. The program allowed me to tap into my passion for leadership development which dovetailed into a career as an assistant professor of management at John Carroll University. Anyone looking to continue their education in a supportive, developmental and challenging environment should take a close look at Antioch University.”

Dr. Scott J. Allen, Cohort 2
Assistant Professor of Management
John Carroll University

“The Antioch PhD in Leadership in Change program is a wonderful vehicle to explore your areas of passion and commitment. It enables the practitioner to evolve into a scholar (or better scholar) in ways that matter to them. The program allows one the flexibility to create an academic path of their own while adhering to rigorous scholarship. Equally important is the community of learners that share your journey through the program. The faculty and staff of the program are excellent partners and collaborators. They care deeply about your success and it shows. I have tremendous respect and affection for the faculty and staff. The personal connections afforded by the program are just as important as the academic discipline and instruction. I would not trade this experience for anything and I would do it again (just a bit faster). I find it has helped me become a more reflective practitioner and much more interested in research than I ever imagined possible. The vehicles for conference participation and publication along the way are a nice addition to the central work. I appreciate that the program allowed me to bring my whole self to the experience without reservation or reluctance.”
