Ohio K-12 Reading Endorsement
Reports of the number of students who struggle with reading proficiency range from 20% to 40%. The demand for specialized reading intervention and support is rising as schools seek to improve literacy rates, meet standardized testing benchmarks, and, most importantly, cultivate a generation of capable readers. Teachers holding an Ohio Reading Endorsement specialize in assessing and supporting students with a range of reading abilities, and particularly students with specific reading challenges.
This degree is offered online through Antioch University's New England Campus.
Program Overview
Antioch’s Ohio K-12 Reading Endorsement is fully approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education. The 12-credit online program offers students advanced-level study of historical and current reading theory, study and application of relevant Ohio-approved assessment administration and analysis, evidence-based pedagogical practices for diverse readers in grades K-12, and hands-on clinical experience, supported by a university supervisor.

Shifts in Education Policy are creating an ongoing demand for qualified reading teachers. Federal and state policies, such as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and Science of Reading (SOR) mandates, emphasize literacy as a key factor in academic success. This has created a demand for highly trained educators who can meet SOR-framed literacy standards and help schools comply with policy requirements.
Teachers who pursue reading endorsement benefit from increased job prospects, elevated classroom instructional skills, and the opportunity to transition from classroom teacher to reading specialist or coaching positions. The twelve credits earned through the graduate level reading endorsement raise teachers’ level on the pay scale.
