Ohio TESOL K-12 Endorsement

Ohio’s students are increasingly diverse. Over the past two decades, the number of English Learners in Ohio has doubled. According to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, there are over 80,000 English Learners in Ohio who speak more than 90 different languages.   The TESOL endorsement offers teachers of students in all subject areas and at all grade levels the tools and understandings necessary to provide an equitable education for all English Learners.

This degree is offered by Antioch University's New England Campus.

Program Overview

The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) endorsement is available to  Ohio teachers who wish to add a TESOL endorsement to their existing license. Through the 12-hour TESOL endorsement program, students gain advanced-level understandings of linguistics and language acquisition; learn and apply evidence-based strategies for teaching English Learners; engage in critical discussion of English Learners and their school, family, and community-based experiences; and complete a hands-on data-driven learning and teaching practicum.

A 50-hour clinical placement is required for the Ohio endorsement. Twenty hours may be acquired across the program through relevant teaching engagement. The final 30 clinical hours are embedded in ED 6250.

The influx of English Learners is not expected to slow down anytime soon.  The significant economic growth and burgeoning corporate expansions in the central Ohio Area, combined with established and growing communities of refugees, point to a continued increase in English learners in Ohio’s schools. Combined with the overall teacher shortage, it is safe to conclude  that Ohio will be in need of TESOL teachers throughout the next decade and beyond.
