MA in Humane Education
Educate for Long-Term, Systemic Change
The MA in Humane Education is recommended for non-classroom educators and social justice, animal protection, and environmental advocates who wish to work outside of school settings. Coursework enables students to raise awareness and educate effectively about the interconnected issues affecting people, animals, and the environment, with a focus on fostering long-term, systemic change.
This Master of Arts degree is offered by Antioch University New England in partnership with the Institute for Humane Education.
Program Overview
This 33-credit graduate program is delivered online, with an optional one-week, 3-credit summer residency held at the Institute for Humane Education in Surry, Maine.
President's Merit Scholarship
The President’s Merit Scholarships are awarded to new students seeking a master’s degree. Awards are determined by prior academic performance (minimum 3.40 GPA) and work/life experience. Awards of $6000 are distributed equally over the first two academic years of a student’s program. You must remain enrolled full-time, and your academic progress will be reviewed each term. You must complete each course in which you are registered in order to continue receiving the scholarship.
Additional Information
MA students are required to take six foundational courses in humane education, plus a practicum, three electives, and a capstone course. The 3-credit summer residency counts as an elective. [Students are encouraged to attend a 3-credit Humane Education Residency week at the Institute for Humane Education in Surry, Maine. If unable to attend, students may take a third elective instead.

Education Programs at Antioch University New England value colleagueship and strong learning communities. We offer a 10% discount for 3 or more students from the same school or school district who attend any of our AUNE Education MEd or Certificate programs at the same time. - Essay questions, admissions, and program-specific
- Resume/curriculum vitae (CV)
- Non-refundable $50 application fee
- Submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities where you earned a degree or certificate.

- Two letters of recommendation are required, from people who are in a position to evaluate your professional or academic work. The person making the recommendation may not be related to you.
- There are additional requirements for International applicants.
- Interview with a faculty member of the department to which you seek entry if selected. This can be in person, by phone, or via Skype.
