Dr. Coltan J. Schoenike (pronouns: they/them) is a Teaching Faculty member at Antioch in the Relational Therapy Division and serves as the Program Director for Sexuality Studies, overseeing certificates in Sex Therapy, Sex Education, and Gender-Affirming Clinical Practice. Dr. Coltan is no stranger to Antioch, however, as they received their PhD in Couple and Family Therapy from the New England campus. Joining the faculty at Antioch after completing their doctorate, especially in the role of Sexuality Studies Program Director, was a dream role.
Dr. Coltan is a marriage and family therapist, AAMFT Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor, and an AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist.
The intersection of lived experiences as a queer and transgender person and growing up in rural Wisconsin, where resources were scarce, has been a prominent influence in their work. Much of Dr. Coltan's clinical practice and research efforts have aimed to increase access to mental health services for marginalized communities and foster more diverse representation in the fields of sex and relational therapies, especially in terms of gender and sexuality. This need especially became apparent in their first few years of clinical practice, where they were one of only a few out and openly trans therapists in the entire state.
In addition to Antioch, Dr. Coltan engages in this work at their clinical practice, Edges Wellness Center, where they maintain a small caseload as well as supervise a diverse group of interns and pre-licensed professionals. They are also currently serving as Chair for AAMFT's Queer and Trans Advocacy Network and authored a chapter in AAMFT's recently released gender-affirming care guidelines.
Outside of their professional work, Dr. Coltan is a proud geek and spends their free time gaming, creating art, and spending time with their partners.
