POSITION: Career Counselor
LOCATION: Santa Barbara, CA
DEPARTMENT: Student Services
REPORTS TO: Title III Grant Director

Reporting to the Grant Project Director as part of the Envisioning Career Success Project, the Career Counselor will provide career services and develop undergraduate work and paid internship placements that support students’ post degree career success. The position involves wide-ranging community outreach and networking to develop work and internship opportunities for students in their field of study.
- Develop cooperative work and internship agreements with community partners in not-for-profit agencies and businesses that enable students to gain employment experience and training
- Assess career related variables to assist students in finding satisfying internships and employment related to student career goals
- Maintain a directory of internships that includes information on tasks, learning to be acquired, and time and experience requirements of the site
- Place students in paid internships or jobs to meet annual placement objectives
- Provide individual career counseling to assist students with career appraisal, decision-making, planning, and acquisition of pre-employment skills (resumes, interviewing, networking)
- Process internship related paperwork and oversee student progress
- Arrange for community based mentors that are a match for students’ career goals.
- Assist with visioning the integration of career development concepts and skills into the undergraduate curriculum
- Present career development concepts and skills in undergraduate classes, offer employment interviewing practice, and arrange networking events that facilitate skills for employment
- Track all activity to meet federal reporting standards
- Bachelor’s degree in Career Counseling or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. Master’s degree preferred.
- At least three years of experience with job/internship/workforce development and placements in a diverse institution of higher education.
- Experience with vocational assessment, career planning and development, and teaching job search skills such as resume writing, networking, and employment interviewing.
- Strong interpersonal, public presentation, and networking skills
- Ability to attend to details and collaborate on program planning
- Ability to get along well with others and be a positive member of the AUSB community.
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of independent judgment and the ability to meet goals in a timely manner.
- A strong commitment and understanding of the AUSB mission. An understanding of and commitment to AUSB students, especially adult learners, underserved and non-traditional students.
